USC celebrated the heritage of mariachi culture at the 24th Annual Mariachi Festival in Boyle Heights on Sunday, November 23, 2014.
Nurses from Keck School of Medicine at USC offered free flu shots and blood pressure checks, and health educators from the Masters in Public Health program provided information on a variety of health topics such as diabetes, free cancer screening resources and emerging research and clinical trials. They also distributed free totes and sunscreen.
The Health Sciences Campus Community Partnerships office under Civic Engagement also provided information about the HSC Master Plan and community programming activities throughout the University. “We are happy to bring the latest, most up to date health information from experts on the Health Sciences Campus to benefit community members at such events where we can reach hundreds in one day” said Zul Surani, Executive Director of Health Sciences Campus Community Partnerships.
The 24th Annual Mariachi Plaza Festival was made possible by Telemundo/NBC,Southern California Gas Company. HealthNet, LA City Councilman 14th District José Huizar, LA City Department of Cultural Affairs, LA County Supervisor Gloria Molina, USC Civic Engagement & USC Keck Medicine, White Memorial Medical Center, Metro, Boyle Heights Chamber of Commerce, VEDC Boyle Heights Capital Access Center, Great Minds in STEM, STEM Up, Barrio Planners Incorporated, Organización de Mariachis Unidos de Los Angeles (OMULA) and Mothers of East Los Angeles.
