USC staff member and cancer survivor Ghecemy Lopez was recognized for her advocacy efforts by the National Breast Cancer Coalition at an awards gala in New York City.
The National Breast Cancer Coalition awards recognize individuals who have made a true difference in the world of breast cancer and embody the spirit of NBCC—passionate, relentless and mission-driven social innovators.
Hillary Rodham Clinton, Cindi Leive, Editor-in-Chief, Glamour, and fellow advocate Wanda Lucas joined Ghecemy as this year’s recipients.
“In addition to honoring Former Secretary Clinton and Cindi Leive, I always look forward to recognizing the commitment and vision of our grassroots advocates. They are incredible women who understand the importance of our mission to end breast cancer,” said Fran Visco, President, National Breast Cancer Coalition.
Ghecemy serves on patient and family boards at several hospitals, meets with representatives of local breast cancer organizations, volunteers for Susan G. Komen, supports cancer education outreach in the most underserved areas in South and East Los Angeles, as previously mentioned, and is a board member of the Breast Cancer Care and Research Fund.
She also participates in the Adolescent and Young Adult program at Keck Medical Center of USC, the hospital where she was treated, serving as a patient advocate and works with medical and research teams there to develop programs and generate ideas that benefit patients at the Children’s Hospital of LA and USC Norris Comprehensive Cancer Centern.
“It is a privilege to be the voice of my community as we move forward working together toward reaching Breast Cancer Deadline 2020®,” said Lopez, “I am thrilled to receive this award.”
