Pride and Prejudice

On June 18 and 26, 2011, students participating in the USC Neighborhood Academic Initiative Theatre Workshop performed Pride and Prejudice for packed audiences at Mudd Hall on USC’s University Park campus. With dramatic music and English country choreography, the students reinvented the space into Regency England, memorized a 73-page script, and retold the intricate tale of the division of class, the irony of hypocrisy, and the era’s social and gender expectations with confidence and aplomb. Also in preparation for the performance, they partnered with the USC Joint Educational Project — a program that combines academic coursework with hands-on experience in neighborhoods surrounding the university — and the Jane Austen Society of North America to attend Regency Balls, browse costume curatorial files at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and work with Joint Educational Project mentors while writing essays for Austen Society essay competitions.
