Catalina Island Field Trip for USC Science Fair Essay Contest Winners
Sheridan Street Elementary School fifth-graders Sergio Batalla (left) and Christian Gomez — two of five winners of the 2011 USC Science Fair Essay Contest — enjoy kayaking off the coast of Catalina Island. The Science Fair, formally known as the Health Sciences Campus (HSC) Health and Science Expo, is an annual science education and mentorship program that has supplemented science curricula at the HSC Family of Schools for more than 10 years. The program culminates in a science competition in which 350 to 400 fifth-graders visit the campus to present their original science projects before a panel of judges. And each spring since 2010, USC Government and Civic Engagement’s Department of Community Partnerships has taken contest winners to the university’s Wrigley Marine Science Center for an all-day field trip that encompasses kayaking, snorkeling in Big Fisherman’s Cove, and exploring the sights and sounds of the island during a nature hike at Blue Cavern Ridge.
